1. Explain the process of digestion.
Put food in your mouth, then you use your teeth and tongue to chew it
(physical), amylase in your saliva will break down starches, and sugars
(chemical). Now the food that is mashed up is called bolus, and it travels
through the esophagus, a tube which goes to the stomach. Now the bolus, is in
the stomach, and the stomach muscle squeeze the bolus, and some strong acid
inside the stomach, called hydrochloric, will break down more of the bolus. Then
the mashed up bolus pass it's way to the pancreas, which is a "gate" to the
small intestine. In there, there are two liquids, one is pepsin, which breaks
down the protein. Another one is lipase and it breaks down fat. Now the bolus is
called chyme, and makes it's way to the small intestine. There is a kind of hair
called villi in the small intestine, and it absorbs all the liquid, and the good
stuff (nutrients, vitamins), and gives it to the blood steam, and into the
cells, to provide your whole body energy and nutrients, as blood stream flows
around your body. After going through the small intestine, the left over chyme
goes to the large intestine. Then the left over or excess water and electrolytes
are absorbed, and the chyme becomes more solid, and it is forming feces
(poop). The feces then makes it's way down to the rectum, and stays for a day or
two. Then after you feel the tummy moment, the feces goes to a muscle called
anus and it comes out of your anus.
2. Explain why physical and chemical digestion happens in
the mouth and stomach.
physical: Because the teeth
and tongue in the mouth can chew the food into smaller pieces, and stomach's
muscle can squeeze the bolus down to the digestion system, so physical digestion
happen in the mouth and stomach.
chemical: Because there is
saliva (contains amylase) in the mouth which can break down the sugars and
starches, and there is hydrochloric acid in stomach, which can break down more
of the bolus, so chemical digestion happens in the mouth and
stomach.
3. Give two reasons why the digestive system is
important?
Because food should be break down by the digestive
system, such that, energy and nutrients can be absorbed and make you strong and
healthy.
Because blood should pass through the digestive system
to get the nutrients and send to other parts of the body.
